Strong earthquake rocks region near Chile-Peru border

WASHINGTON: A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 shook an area near the border between Chile and Peru early Monday, US government researchers said.

The epicenter of the tremor, which occurred on the Chilean side of the border at 6:00 am local time (1000 GMT), was located 46 kilometers (28 miles) north northwest of the Chilean town of Putre and 56 kilometers (34 miles) east northeast of the Peruvian town of Tacna, the US Geological Survey said.

The depth of the quake was 98 kilometers (61 miles), the agency said.
