A report by the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University said the strongest quake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted an area near the town of Dehloran.
The Seismological network of the Tehran University registered the quake at 05:51 hours local time (0121 GMT), the report said.
The main earthquake was epicentered in an area 47.05 degrees in longitude and 32.5 degrees in latitude, it added.
There are yet no reports on the number of possible casualties or damage to properties by the quake.
Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth’s crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.
At 15:37 UTC another magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit the region, according to the USGS.
