A 4.0-magnitude earthquake rattled towns in four Midwestern states including downstate Carbondale, though no major damage was reported, officials said.

Residents in Illinois and three other states have reported feeling the ground shook just before 4 a.m. Tuesday, WSIU Radio in Carbondale reported.

The quake was centered about five miles from East Prairie, Mo., about 16 miles from Cairo close to where Interstates 55 and 57 converge.

The U.S. Geological Survey says residents in Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky have reported feeling the quake.
