Earthquake and Volcano Watch – El Hierro

Posted on October 8, 2011

El Hierro

The earthquake swarm at El Hierro in the Canary Islands is continuing to intensify. The number of tremors have doubled in the last 3 days.

Recorded earthquakes:

Wednesday 5th – 79

Thursday 6th – 160

Friday 7th –  177

The last couple of days have seen the earthquakes becoming more shallow at within 11km of the surface (previously within 14-15km). The increase in more shallow earthquakes means that magma is pushing to the surface, although there’s still no way to know what sort of eruption may occur or when it will happen.
